The GR Lens uses 6 high-quality class lenses and compensates for various aberrations, as well as weaker light in the periphery to deliver high-resolution, high-contrast reproduction over the entire image.

It has a fine-tuning aperture between F2.4 and F9 and has features such as color aberration correction to elimiate purple fringes and Ricoh's advanced CCD for high quality images. Ricoh minimizes noise at the source by only choosing electronic circuits that pass rigorous screening to offer excellent low-noise characteristics. There are several manual adjustment settings that recreate the ability of photographers to change film types and image quality when using traditional cameras. It has a high-precision AE that quickly adjusts to any shooting condition and a rapid 1.3 second shooting interval allowing rapid, full quality images. Other features include an easy to use menu, sturdy magnesium body, built-in pop-up flash and host shoe for optional flash or optical viewfinder.
